10,000 Acre Solar Farm in Georgia

Americus Solar LLC, is subsidiary of Invenergy LLC, a renewable energy development company based in Chicago, and they want to build a 9,661.18-acre solar farm in the area of Cobb, DeSoto, and Leslie, Georgia.

At a Sumter County Planning and Zoning Commission meeting in August of 2019, local residents sited negative property values, an adverse impact on wildlife, and how the appearance of solar panels would adversely affect the natural beauty of the area.

At the end of that meeting, the Sumter County Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously to table the issue for 30 days until its next meeting.

At a later meeting in October of 2019, the Planning and Zoning Commission agreed to move forward on the plans for the almost 10,000 Solar Farm, in spite of the complaints from residents and the fact that a spokesman from Americus Solar LLC admits to not having a final layout for the project.

This is just another example of zoning boards caring more about a promise of big tax revenue from big business (that can easily get broken if the company goes out of business) then the history of the land, wildlife, trees, croplands, waterways, and residents that have lived on land sometimes for generations.

It's a shame that a few individuals on a zoning board can in one day, make a decision that can disrupt the lives of so many people possibly for the rest of their lives. It reminds me of the terrorists that use guns or bomb to destroy the hopes and dreams of so many families that have lost limbs or other family members.
