"The special panel that decides on renewable energy proposals has approved a 90.5-megawatt solar farm on about 900 acres of leased farmland in the communities of Canajoharie and Minden in Montgomery County.

The $135 million Mohawk Solar project, which developers have said could be running by the fall of 2021, would produce enough power for about 20,000 homes.

Mohawk Solar is part of the Portland, Ore.-based Avangrid company which is itself a subsidiary of the Spanish Iberdrola energy conglomerate. Iberdrola also operates several utility companies including New York State Electric & Gas.

According to state regulators and the company, the solar farm should generate up to $5.2 million worth of local property tax revenue over 15 years and create 369 construction jobs while it is being put up.

Once completed, there will be about five jobs attached to the solar complex.

Landowners, including a number farmers, will get $600,000 annually to lease the land."
