And further since only has what 27% efficiency, when the sun isn't shining -- those who are using as energy course still need to depend on energy produced by natural gas and coal. Same situation with wind! Thanks for posting.

The chart changes constantly depending on the environment... if it's really cold outside. they need to reserve the natural gas for residential heat... all the natural gas turbines get curtailed (shut off) ... and the other power sources have to step up their generation. Solar can't do that if the sun isn't shining, same with the wind turbines.

A Supervisor left the power plant I worked at and moved to Hawaii. He came back 5 years later looking for a job in the states ... most all the power in the islands there comes from solar all day, but when the sun goes down they have to ramp up all the fossil fuel units to keep the voltage and frequency from dropping on "the grid". These units have been "barely on" all day and suddenly have to go to max generation. The way to kill a steam turbine generator set is to cycle the steam flow up and down causing thermal stresses and possible water induction. The turbine rotor cracks, tremendously reduces the lifespan of the steam turbine ... they are made to run wide open. The fortunate part of all this is the consumer power consumption goes down at night considerably, reducing the need for power generation. The prices also go up and down depending on supply and demand. The national energy reliability Commission and the Federal Energy reliability commission, or nerc and ferc oversee the sustainability of the grid ... aka they keep a close eye on reliability and the overall "health" of the electricity going thru the power lines (frequency and voltage). Your home appliances can be ruined by low voltage if one or more sources trip off and the difference can't be made up quick enough. Nuclear power plants cannot change their generation as quickly as fossil fuel plants, so they need a good variety of generation sources to be reliable.
